Jury Convicts Stockton Man for Fatal Family Shooting, Rejects Self-Defense

Stockton Man Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Fatal Family Shooting

A San Joaquin County jury has convicted 23-year-old Kenneth Ernesto “Ernie” Mejia of second-degree murder and multiple felonies in the deadly November shooting of a family member, officials confirmed. The verdict came after the jury rejected Mejia’s claim that he acted in self-defense during a violent confrontation that also endangered two children.

The fatal incident occurred on November 9, 2024, when Mejia reportedly harassed two children under 12 years old and taunted them as they rode bicycles near his Stockton residence. Prosecutors presented evidence that Mejia swerved his vehicle toward the children before the children’s father confronted him at his home.

Violence Escalates to Deadly Shooting

According to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, the victim was shot three times, including twice in the back while fleeing. He died at the scene from his injuries. Mejia also opened fire at a vehicle occupied by another person, narrowly missing that occupant.

The DA’s press release emphasized the gravity of Mejia’s choices:

“The defendant chose a path of lethal violence over the bonds of family,”

said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas.

“I am incredibly proud of our prosecution team and our partners in law enforcement who navigated a web of lies and witness hostility to ensure that justice was served for the victims and their loved ones.”

Conviction Details and Next Steps

Mejia was convicted on charges including second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement, attempted murder with a firearm enhancement, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon involving a motor vehicle.

The Stockton Police Department, along with detectives Matthew Majeski, Detective Magana, Sgt. Barrington, and District Attorney Investigator Michael Gandy, played key roles in the investigation, according to the DA’s statement. Witness coordinator Alexis Soto and victim advocate Isabella Cruz were recognized for their support of the victim’s family.

Crucial testimony from the two young boys directly involved in the harassment and confrontation helped secure the conviction, highlighting the emotional toll and community impact of the case.

Sentencing Scheduled for Late June

Mejia’s sentencing and trial on aggravating factors is set for June 29 at 1:30 p.m., where he faces a potential prison term ranging from 40 years to life plus 11 additional years. The verdict serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of familial violence and illegal firearm possession in communities nationwide.

Authorities in San Joaquin County and beyond continue cracking down on gun violence amid rising concerns nationwide about shootings threatening public safety. This conviction reinforces the message that lethal violence triggers severe legal consequences.
