The Longboat Key Police Department confirmed the arrest, marking another enforcement action against vehicle registration fraud in the area.
Officer Troyer, patrolling early that morning at 2:44 a.m., stopped a black GMC Yukon with an expired license plate sticker. The vehicle had previously been stopped with the same driver, who was issued a warning citation for driving with an expired registration.
Further investigation revealed the vehicle bore a Tennessee license plate with a validation sticker expiring in July 2025, but the number “5” was altered with a Sharpie to resemble a “6.” Meanwhile, the vehicle’s Florida registration had expired in February 2026, and the plate was registered to another person from Tennessee.
Officer Troyer arrested the driver on-site and transported him to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Jail. Upon booking, the suspect was read his constitutional Miranda rights but chose not to comment. Police confiscated the altered license plate for evidence and filed it with the case report.
The passenger was unable to drive due to lacking a valid license and was assisted by Officer Mathis, who arranged for the vehicle to be towed. Police cleared the case after arrest and ensured the passenger’s safe removal from the scene.
