Reality television star Amy Childs has made an emotional appeal to her followers on social media after her cousin’s five-month-old daughter, Lila Brincat, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The diagnosis has prompted a desperate fundraising campaign to help cover medical expenses and secure treatment options for the infant, who is currently facing a significant health crisis.
On March 4, 2024, Childs shared her cousin Hannah Brincat‘s fundraising initiative on Instagram, urging her over one million followers to contribute or spread the word. Lila was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumour (AT/RT) shortly after her birth, a condition that predominantly affects children aged three and younger. The family has been thrust into a harrowing medical journey since Lila’s diagnosis at just three weeks old.
The fundraising page, hosted on JustGiving, outlines the devastating circumstances the family has faced. Following the diagnosis, Lila underwent a nine-hour surgery to remove the tumour, with chemotherapy treatments commencing at only five weeks old. Unfortunately, after six rounds of chemotherapy, an MRI scan revealed that the tumour had returned, leaving the family with a grim prognosis.
Hannah Brincat expressed the profound impact of this ordeal on their lives, stating, “Our lives have been turned upside down and we are devastated.” Recently, the family moved into a children’s hospice after spending four months in the hospital, separated from Lila’s three older siblings.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, the Brincat family remains hopeful. They have reached out to an oncologist in Toronto, who specializes in research related to AT/RT, in hopes of obtaining a second opinion on potential treatments. Hannah shared her uncertainty regarding available options and the potential costs involved, emphasizing the family’s determination to explore every avenue for Lila’s care.
The fundraiser originally aimed for a target of £25,000, which has since been surpassed, indicating significant community support. Hannah reassured donors that their contributions would not go to waste, emphasizing that any funds not utilized for Lila’s treatment would be directed to charities that have supported the family during this challenging time.
The appeal has resonated deeply across social media, with many users expressing their condolences and sending messages of support. Comments range from heartfelt prayers to encouraging words for the infant, highlighting the compassionate response from the online community.
In addition to her advocacy for Lila, Amy Childs is a mother of four herself. She welcomed twins, a boy and girl named Billy River and Amelia Mae, with her fiancé Billy Delbosq in April 2023. Childs shares her two older children, Polly and Ritchie, from previous relationships, often featuring them on social media. She has previously addressed the absence of Ritchie from her public life, explaining that the decision to limit his exposure was made with his father, prioritizing Ritchie’s ability to choose his own public presence in the future.
For now, Childs is channeling her energy into supporting baby Lila and her family during this critical time. The story of Lila Brincat has touched many hearts, drawing attention to the urgent need for support in the fight against childhood cancer.
