Rocky Mount Man Arrested for Attempted Murder After Shooting

UPDATE: A shocking incident in Rocky Mount has left a woman critically injured after being shot multiple times by her boyfriend, Hayward Mann, who is now facing serious charges, including felony attempted first-degree murder. The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office reports that the shooting occurred on July 15, 2023, at a residence on Speights Chapel Road, near Whitakers, North Carolina.

Authorities received a call about a dispute at the home in the 10000 block shortly before the shooting was reported. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services quickly transported her to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for urgent treatment.

Deputies revealed that Mann, aged 49, had fled the scene shortly after the shooting. However, law enforcement acted swiftly, locating him soon after and taking him into custody without further incident. When apprehended, Mann was found in possession of a firearm, which has since been recovered by deputies.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed the condition of the victim, but her injuries are described as severe. Mann is currently being held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
