UPDATE: Alarming new findings reveal that illegal disposable vapes circulating in Hungary contain dangerous levels of toxic heavy metals. A recent study from the University of California, Davis has confirmed that popular brands of these unregulated devices include carcinogenic substances like lead, nickel, and antimony, raising urgent public health concerns.
The research indicates that a single vape device can expose users to as much lead as smoking 19 packs of cigarettes. Lead, known for its neurotoxic properties, poses serious health risks, with no safe level of exposure. The lead researcher noted that components made from leaded copper alloy can leach toxic substances into the vape liquid even before use.
In Hungary, despite strict regulations restricting the sale of tobacco products to licensed shops, illegal vape devices have flooded the online market. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has been actively conducting raids, recently seizing 100 illegal devices from an online trader, who now faces fines totaling millions of forints.
The dangers extend beyond chemical exposure. Some of these illegal vapes are equipped with poorly secured lithium-ion batteries that can overheat, leading to fires and short circuits. Transporting these devices in inadequate packaging increases the risk of instability, placing consumers in jeopardy.
The urgency for action is clear. Current regulations in Hungary prohibit the sale and import of flavored e-cigarettes, with penalties ranging from 1 to 50 million forints for individuals and 5 to 500 million forints for businesses. However, with 22% of Hungarian students aged 13–15 having tried e-cigarettes, and 10% using them regularly, experts warn that the black market is effectively reaching vulnerable youth.
Authorities stress that more robust measures are needed. Recommendations include stricter customs inspections for parcel deliveries, mandatory chemical testing for legally sold devices, and comprehensive prevention programs in schools. These programs should not only focus on prohibition but also educate students about the specific health risks associated with lead exposure and carcinogenic metals.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for consumers to be aware of the potential dangers linked to illegal vaping products and for authorities to enhance enforcement strategies to protect public health.
