Piedmont Grass Fire Claims Life of 27-Year-Old Man

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Piedmont, South Carolina, as a grass fire claimed the life of a 27-year-old man. Emergency responders rushed to the scene on February 11 at approximately 6:40 PM, after receiving a call about a fire that had spiraled out of control in the Woodglen Subdivision off Highway 86.

Firefighters from Wren and Piedmont arrived quickly to find the homeowners struggling to combat the flames. A civilian, later identified as John Robert Simpson, collapsed due to smoke inhalation and received immediate medical attention. Despite the rapid response by the Medshore ambulance service, Simpson succumbed to his injuries at 8:00 PM at Prisma Greenville Hospital.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Simpson’s death was a result of exacerbation of asthma due to smoke inhalation and has ruled it as accidental. Greg Shore, the Anderson County Coroner, is overseeing the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.

Firefighters from two Quick Response Vehicles (QRVs) and Anderson County Deputies also responded to the scene, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
