Tidal Surge Claims Three Lives in Spain’s Canary Islands

Strong waves during a tidal surge in Spain’s Canary Islands resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left over a dozen others injured on November 4, 2023. The incidents occurred along the coast of Tenerife, with emergency services reporting that the victims were swept into the Atlantic Ocean by powerful currents.

Authorities confirmed that two of the deceased, a man and a woman, were pulled into the ocean in the municipalities of La Guancha, Puerto de la Cruz, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A third man was discovered floating in the water near a beach in Granadilla. In total, at least 15 people sustained injuries during four separate incidents linked to the tidal surge.

Warnings were issued prior to the surge, advising residents and tourists to avoid coastal paths and refrain from taking photos or videos in dangerous areas. The Spanish authorities had anticipated the hazardous conditions due to strong winds and rough seas, urging caution among beachgoers.

The tragic events underscore the potential dangers of coastal activities during severe weather. Emergency services reiterated the importance of adhering to safety guidelines in order to minimize risks during such natural occurrences.
