American Airlines is set to enhance its international operations with the introduction of upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners starting in 2026. As the world’s largest airline by daily flights and total passengers, American Airlines boasts a fleet of over 1,000 aircraft, with the 787-9 being a critical component of its long-haul strategy. The airline has recently begun taking delivery of these new aircraft, equipped with a redesigned cabin to improve passenger experience.
The latest configurations of the Boeing 787-9 aim to meet the increasing demand for premium air travel. Currently, American Airlines has 32 Boeing 787-9s in its fleet, which includes 22 older models accommodating up to 285 passengers in a three-class layout. In contrast, the ten newest 787-9s can carry 244 passengers, with a significant increase in capacity for business and premium economy classes. Specifically, these aircraft feature 51 seats in business class, 32 in premium economy, and 161 in economy class.
Introducing the Flagship Suite
A key highlight of the revamped Boeing 787-9 is the introduction of the Flagship Suite, a new business class product that promises a more competitive long-haul experience. The suite features fully enclosed spaces that enhance privacy and comfort, with each cabin equipped with a sliding door, direct aisle access, and a lie-flat bed. In addition to improved seating, enhanced onboard amenities include upgraded bedding, redesigned amenity kits, and a modern dining experience tailored for long-haul flights.
Passengers can also expect advanced entertainment options, including a large 4K high-definition screen with Bluetooth connectivity, enabling the use of personal wireless headphones. These enhancements reflect American Airlines’ commitment to elevating its premium offerings, particularly on high-demand transatlantic and transpacific routes.
Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, remarked on the new aircraft, stating, “Every aspect of our new 787-9 is designed to feel premium in nature. Whether flying for business or pleasure, having the opportunity to explore other parts of the world should be an exciting and memorable experience.”
Expanding Routes with New Aircraft
The first Boeing 787-9 equipped with the Flagship Suites entered service in June 2025, primarily flying between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airline plans to introduce these aircraft on several international routes, including:
– Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) starting June 5, 2025
– Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) beginning August 6, 2025
– Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Zurich Airport (ZRH) from September 3, 2025
– Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Brisbane Airport (BNE) commencing October 26, 2025
As more of these newly configured 787-9s join the fleet, American Airlines will expand its offerings to include routes from DFW to Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) and Auckland Airport (AKL), among others.
Beyond business class, American Airlines has also revamped its premium economy and economy class offerings. Passengers in premium economy can now enjoy redesigned seats featuring enhanced privacy and comfort features, along with upgraded amenities such as wireless charging and USB-C power. The economy class has similarly benefited from improvements, with each seat now including USB-C and AC power as well as advanced inflight entertainment options.
The new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners not only bolster American Airlines’ fleet but also signify a strategic move to enhance its competitive edge in the premium travel market. As the airline prepares to welcome more of these aircraft, passengers can anticipate a quieter and more comfortable flying experience on their international journeys.
