BREAKING: A fire erupted this morning on Dana Street in Wilkes-Barre, threatening the home of a local family. Thanks to a working smoke detector, the family was alerted in time to escape the flames.
The fire ignited around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Farley Lane, prompting an immediate response from the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department. Chief Jay Delaney confirmed that firefighters faced significant challenges due to the home’s slate roof, describing the situation as “labor-intensive.”
UPDATE: The homeowner, Carolina Brito, reported that the fire likely started in the back of the attic, although the exact cause remains unknown. “I had the turkey in the refrigerator and everything,” Brito said, reflecting on her disrupted Thanksgiving plans. She has lived in the home for 15 years with her son, while her husband was away in Florida. Thankfully, Brito confirmed that everyone is safe, and the house is insured.
Fire crews successfully rescued the family’s dog and rabbit during the operation, showcasing the department’s commitment to protecting lives and property. Despite the extensive damage, Delaney praised the firefighters for their efforts in preventing total destruction of the home.
“This fire could have had a much worse outcome without the smoke detector,” Delaney emphasized. The incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in protecting families.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Residents are urged to check their smoke detectors and ensure they are functioning properly.
