URGENT UPDATE: Morgan Geyser, the notorious figure in the Slender Man stabbing case, has been arrested in Posen, Illinois, after a multi-state manhunt. Authorities confirmed she was taken into custody on Sunday night at approximately 9:54 p.m. after cutting off her monitoring bracelet and fleeing from a Wisconsin group home.
Geyser, now 22 years old, gained infamy in 2014 when she and an accomplice stabbed their friend, Payton Leutner, 19 times, in a brutal attempt to appease the fictional character “Slender Man.” The incident shocked the nation and has drawn continued media attention.
According to police, Geyser was located at a Thornton’s Truck Stop on 14840 S. Western Avenue in Posen, accompanied by a 42-year-old man who has since been charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing identification. Both reportedly arrived in Posen by bus. Police stated Geyser was unharmed at the time of her arrest.
The Posen Police Department received reports of Geyser’s disappearance early Sunday morning, shortly after she left the group home where she had been residing. Surveillance footage from Saturday evening showed her last seen in Madison, Wisconsin, with an adult acquaintance around 8 p.m.
In a heartfelt plea, Geyser’s mother, Angie Geyser, urged the public to assist in locating her daughter. “If you see Morgan, please call the police. Morgan, if you can see this, we love you and just want to know you are safe,” she stated.
Geyser had recently been released from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute after a judge ruled she was ready for supervised release, a decision backed by testimony from three psychologists. However, concerns were raised regarding her mental health, particularly after reports of her having violent communications with individuals outside the facility.
Following her arrest, Geyser will be held until she can be transferred to Cook County Jail for an extradition hearing. In a statement, her attorney, Tony Cotton, urged her to turn herself in, stressing that it was “in her best interest.”
The stabbing incident in 2014 left Leutner with life-threatening injuries, but she has since recovered and continues to advocate for her story. The Leutner family remains vigilant and is working closely with law enforcement to ensure their safety during this recent development.
“Payton Leutner and her family are aware of the most recent situation regarding Morgan Geyser,” a spokesperson said. “They are safe and are thankful for the law enforcement efforts involved in apprehending Morgan.”
As the situation develops, authorities are reminding the public to remain alert for further updates. The implications of Geyser’s escape and arrest are significant, reigniting discussions about mental health, legal responsibility, and the ongoing impact of the Slender Man case on all involved.
