UPDATE: Kapa‘a residents should brace for significant traffic disruptions as road closures are confirmed from December 15 to December 17. The Kauai County Department of Public Works and Hirata and Associates Inc. will conduct vital geotechnical subsurface exploration during these dates, impacting daily commutes and travel routes.
The closures are set to take place between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. The sequence begins on December 15 with a single-lane closure on Kukui Street, affecting the left turn lane just west of the Kūhiō Highway intersection. On December 16, a section of Kukui Street’s east side at the same highway junction will be completely closed. The disruptions will conclude on December 17 with the closure of the south end of Niu Street, also near Kūhiō Highway.
Municipal officials warn that while these closures are necessary for future traffic signal improvements and utility pole placement, they will create temporary inconveniences for residents. Access to properties along affected routes will be maintained for residents and business owners.
Residents are urged to heed all posted signage and instructions from flaggers. The county emphasizes,
“Access to properties will be provided. Please observe and obey all traffic controls, posted signs, and flaggers.”
Commuters are advised to allow for extra travel time, anticipate detours, and prepare for potential delays during this critical period.
As the work progresses, Kapa‘a’s community is reminded of the importance of patience and cooperation. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops and ensure you plan your routes accordingly to navigate around these closures effectively.
