Stellantis has announced a significant recall affecting more than 320,000 Jeep plug-in hybrid SUVs across the United States and Canada. This recall specifically targets the 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models due to a fire risk linked to defects in the high-voltage battery packs. The decision follows an investigation in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The NHTSA identified a defect in the lithium-ion cells of the vehicle’s battery pack, which could potentially lead to a short circuit and uncontrolled thermal leaks. Such failures pose a serious fire hazard whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary. Notably, reports have indicated one injury and 19 incidents of fire related to this defect.
In September, Stellantis attempted to address the issue through a battery pack replacement and a software update. Unfortunately, these solutions were unsuccessful, prompting the current recall. A definitive resolution is still pending, but announcements are expected in the near future.
Safety Recommendations for Owners
The NHTSA has urged affected vehicle owners to take immediate precautions. Owners should park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures to mitigate any potential fire risks. It is also recommended that they refrain from charging their vehicles, as the NHTSA cautioned that “the risk of fire may be higher with a charged battery than with a depleted one.”
While Stellantis currently faces no legal action related to this recall, it is involved in a class-action lawsuit concerning defects in other Jeep models, including the 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler, 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator, and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Next Steps for Affected Owners
For those impacted by this recall, additional information can be found on the NHTSA’s official website or by contacting Stellantis directly. While no current class-action lawsuits against Jeep have been reported, the company is under scrutiny due to the fire incidents linked to the defect.
As the situation develops, Stellantis is expected to provide further updates regarding the safety of its vehicles. Owners are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to safety recommendations until a comprehensive solution is implemented.
