On November 18, 2023, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) celebrated exceptional nursing excellence during its inaugural DAISY Award ceremony. A total of 33 nurses, recognized for their dedication and skill, were honored for their significant contributions to the Guam community. The DAISY Award is designed to acknowledge those who “consistently deliver compassionate and skillful care,” as stated in a GMHA press release.
The ceremony featured remarks from Interim GMHA Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon, who emphasized the profound impact nurses have on their patients. “Today’s nominees were remembered because someone felt truly cared for. That is powerful,” Aguon said. She highlighted that the nurses not only contribute to the hospital’s mission but also embody it. Aguon expressed gratitude for their compassion and resilience, especially during challenging times for patients and families.
Among the honorees, Danica Dianzon, a staff nurse in the intensive care unit, was named the first-ever DAISY Award recipient. “I’m overwhelmed and grateful for everybody who helped me get this award,” Dianzon remarked. Having joined GMH after graduating from the University of Guam in 2024, she acknowledged the support of her colleagues in navigating the complexities of working in the ICU. GMH commended her for her positive attitude and the kindness she demonstrates to every patient.
The DAISY Award serves a greater purpose than just recognition; it fosters a culture of gratitude within healthcare settings, enhancing the work environment and uplifting patient care. The nominees represent various departments across GMH, including the ICU, progressive care unit, radiology, special services, surgical unit, labor and delivery, and neonatal intensive care unit.
The initiative reflects GMHA’s commitment to supporting and retaining its nursing workforce, which is essential to the hospital’s patient care mission. Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, also a nurse, addressed the nominees, acknowledging the skills required to thrive in high-stress environments. “Nursing is a calling that demands skill, compassion, and enormous heart, and each of you embodies those qualities every day,” she stated. Guerrero expressed gratitude for the care nurses provide and the comfort they bring to patients and their families.
Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio echoed the governor’s sentiments, describing the work of nurses as “so special.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing their contributions, especially during vulnerable moments in the community. “Today’s celebration is a reminder of just how vital you are to our hospital and to our island,” Tenorio remarked, extending congratulations to all nominees and the inaugural DAISY Award honoree.
This recognition highlights the dedication and professionalism of nurses at GMH, reinforcing the critical role they play in healthcare and community support. The DAISY Award ceremony marks a significant step in honoring those who provide exceptional care and comfort in the healthcare sector.
