Cary Lee Buss, aged 50, of Algona, passed away at her home on November 4, 2025. The community is invited to a Celebration of Life in her honor, scheduled for November 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Water’s Edge Nature Center at Smith Lake in Algona. This gathering aims to share memories, reflect on joyous moments, and celebrate Cary’s vibrant spirit and her remarkable sense of humor.
Attendees are encouraged to come as they are and stay for as long as they wish. Light refreshments will be available, and all are welcome to join in remembering Cary and the beautiful life she lived. Born on May 12, 1975, in Britt, Cary was the daughter of Charles Buss and Janice Strayer. She completed her education at Algona High School after attending schools in Garner and Algona. Cary pursued further studies at La’James Cosmetology School in Mason City, which led to a diverse career that included roles as a cosmetologist, bartender, daycare provider, and most recently, as a Para educator at Bryant Elementary School in Algona. She also worked as a cashier at Casey’s, demonstrating her commitment to serving her community.
Cary had a passion for crafting and camping. She deeply valued her time spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Known for her kind and generous heart, she was always ready to lend a listening ear or a helping hand to those in need.
Left to cherish Cary’s memory are her children, Lacy Wait of Britt, Dakota Wait of Graettinger, and Dylon Wait of Algona. Her grandchildren include Rozlynn, Ryatt, Braxston, Matthew, Kinsley, Braelynn, Oaklynn, Maliah, Clara, Gemma, and Serena. Cary is also survived by her mother, Janice Hartman of Milford; siblings Janet Strayer, Jeannie Buss, Doug Buss, and Lisa Nelson, all of Milford and Dakota City, respectively; as well as extended family, including Luke Williams of Algona and several nieces and nephews.
Cary was preceded in death by her father, Charles Buss; stepfather, Merle Hartman; grandparents, John and Faye Strayer, and Otty and Norma Buss; as well as nephews Matthew Strayer and Alex Nelson, aunt Dort Sandal, and godfather Gary Sandal.
