Coffee Cart Brothers Triumphantly Return After Fight for Spot

UPDATE: After a fierce battle for their beloved coffee cart spot, brothers Adrian and Catalin Manmanole have successfully returned to their original location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The brothers, who have been serving coffee and breakfast to New Yorkers since 1994, faced an unexpected challenge when a concrete flower planter displaced their cart, threatening their business.

The Manmanole brothers, known for their dedication and hard work, were forced to relocate down the street when construction at 66 St and Columbus obstructed their longstanding spot. “One day after we left, they moved the pots, they marked us illegal,” Adrian explained, expressing their distress over the sudden change. “Now we cannot park anymore… It’s killing my business, we make not even half.”

The situation escalated when they contacted 7 On Your Side for help. Following an investigation, it was revealed that 2 Lincoln Square, the building overseeing the construction, did not want vendors near its entrance. However, the NYC Department of Transportation confirmed that their regulations protect vendors from displacement, especially those well-loved by the community.

In a statement, a city spokesperson highlighted that “the goal is not to displace vendors, especially not ones the construction workers adore.” Community members echoed this sentiment, with one satisfied customer stating, “The food is fresh, everything’s perfect. Where do you see that in New York anymore? He’s an immigrant, he works hard, he pays taxes; these are the people we want in this country.”

After reminding the building managers of the DOT regulations, 2 Lincoln Square reversed its decision. Within 24 hours, the flower planter was moved, allowing the Manmanole brothers to reclaim their corner. “Definitely 7 is on our side, thank you,” Catalin said, relieved to be back in their preferred spot.

The brothers’ return was met with excitement from loyal customers. A postal worker exclaimed, “I didn’t know where they went, I finally found them!” The swift resolution of this issue underscores the importance of supporting small businesses in the community and ensuring that vendors can thrive amidst urban development.

As the brothers resume their daily routine of serving hot coffee and breakfast, they reflect on their journey and the support they received. Their story highlights not only the challenges faced by street vendors but also the community’s commitment to preserving local businesses. The brothers are eager to continue providing New Yorkers with their much-loved fare, demonstrating resilience and dedication to their craft.
