Chester Unveils Statue Honoring Kickboxing Pioneer Fredia Gibbs

UPDATE: Chester has officially honored its hometown hero, Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, with a newly unveiled statue that celebrates her groundbreaking achievements in kickboxing. The ceremony took place on November 6, 2023, across from Chester City Hall at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.

This statue marks a pivotal moment for Chester, as Gibbs is recognized as the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title. Mayor Stefan Roots emphasized the significance of her story, calling her “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World,” and highlighting how her journey has inspired countless individuals globally.

“Her story is the story of Chester itself, a narrative of grit, perseverance, and pride,” Roots stated during the unveiling. “Fredia has shown us what’s possible when determination meets purpose.” He further added that her legacy continues to break barriers for women, solidifying her status as a role model.

The statue, sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze in Chester, was originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022. After the closure of the university, the statue was transferred to Villanova University, which generously gifted it to the city of Chester.

At the emotional unveiling, Gibbs expressed her gratitude, stating, “Wow, what a moment. To stand here today, back where it all began in Chester, means everything to me.” She reflected on her roots, saying, “This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us, it represents Chester—the heart, the fight, the resilience.” Holding back tears, she added, “Chester is my story … Thank you, Chester, I love you.”

Mayor Roots declared that this statue stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring everyone who passes by. “It tells them no goal is too big,” he said, reinforcing the pride Chester feels in Gibbs’ accomplishments.

Gibbs’ professional martial arts career spanned over three decades, earning her prestigious titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK. Her achievements in the sport have not only paved the way for future generations but have also put Chester on the global map.
