UCF safety Phil Dunnam is looking to replicate his standout performance as the Knights face No. 6 Texas Tech on Saturday. After a remarkable game against Houston, where he secured three interceptions in a narrow 30-27 loss, Dunnam has emerged as a key player in UCF’s defense. His performance not only set a program record but also marked his first career interception return for a touchdown.
During spring camp, Dunnam consistently showcased his ability to intercept passes, prompting UCF defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to express both excitement and concern. Grinch likened Dunnam’s interception prowess to hitting home runs in batting practice, hoping for similar performances during actual games. Despite not securing an interception in the first eight games of the season, Dunnam’s breakthrough against Houston demonstrated his potential.
The first interception was particularly memorable for Dunnam, as he returned it 43 yards for a pick-six. Reflecting on the moment, he shared, “When I got to the end zone, I’m really just soaking it all in. That’s why you saw me put my hands out, just soaking it all in. It was a great feeling.” After surprising himself with the second interception, Dunnam felt an exhilarating sense of accomplishment with his third.
Grinch noted that while Dunnam’s achievement is impressive, such performances are rare. He recalled a similar instance from his time as a defensive backs coach at Wyoming in 2009, where safety Shamiel Gary recorded three interceptions against Weber State. “I wish I could say it was commonplace,” Grinch stated. “But a lot of times those things are tips or very unique plays. They don’t happen very often. In Phil’s case, it was about making a play.”
As UCF prepares for a challenging road game against Texas Tech, Dunnam aims to carry his momentum into the matchup. The Red Raiders boast an impressive record of 9-1 and rank among the top ten in various offensive metrics, including scoring with an average of 42 points per game and total offense at 477.2 yards per game. Additionally, they rank in the top thirty for both rushing and passing yards.
Dunnam is focused on contributing to his team’s success in any way possible. “After the game on Friday, I was already looking at this week,” he said. “I’m trying to do it again. I’m trying to help this team in multiple ways as I can to get a win.” With a renewed sense of confidence, Dunnam’s performance will be crucial as the Knights take on a formidable opponent in Texas Tech.
