Houlton’s Market Pizza Thrives with Unique Offerings, Community Focus

UPDATE: Houlton’s Market Pizza is making waves in the community with its unique blend of culinary delights and entertainment offerings. Owner Fred Grant, who also revitalized the historic Temple Theatre, is transforming Houlton’s dining and cultural landscape since the restaurant’s opening in August 2021.

Visitors stepping into Market Pizza are greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked pizza, with a cozy atmosphere that invites patrons to relax and enjoy. The restaurant uniquely plays music from WHOU 100.1 FM, enhancing the experience while creating community ties. General Manager Jamie Cianci notes, “We have regulars, and they sit in the same places, and I know their orders by heart now.” This strong connection with customers is a key element of the restaurant’s success.

Grant, who also owns Northern Maine Media, Inc., conceptualized Market Pizza during family discussions about the area’s pizza scene. After years of waiting for the right moment, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred him to turn the dream into reality. “We realized no one was going to come save us and open a pizza place,” he explained. The restaurant’s focus on simple, quality ingredients is essential, with homemade sauce and dough that eliminates fillers, driving customer satisfaction.

Market Pizza employs 11 staff members who ensure a seamless dining experience, offering unique options such as the popular potato pizza, topped with garlic mashed potatoes, cheese, and bacon. This innovative dish reflects Grant’s commitment to creativity and consistency, which Cianci emphasizes as crucial for maintaining quality.

Just across the street, Grant is also breathing new life into the historic Temple Theatre, purchased in June 2023. This iconic venue, over 106 years old, has been updated with modern projection and sound systems. Grant’s vision for the theatre transcends traditional film screenings; he aims to create a vibrant community hub with live performances and themed events, such as nostalgic game nights. Venue Manager Jason Howe remarked, “The Temple Theatre is a little gem in our community,” highlighting its role in preserving local history and fostering new memories.

As Market Pizza continues to thrive, Grant and his team emphasize their commitment to Houlton’s legacy while fostering a sense of community through food and entertainment. The restaurant and theatre partnership reflects a deep-rooted desire to connect with locals and celebrate Houlton’s rich history. With plans for more events and community engagement, the future looks bright for this dynamic duo.
