Ohio State University has announced a significant initiative to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities by planning to hire 100 new faculty members over the next five years. This strategic move aims to advance research and education in AI, reinforcing the institution’s reputation both nationally and internationally.
The ambitious hiring plan was presented by President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. during his recent State of the University address. This initiative underscores Ohio State’s commitment to lead in a rapidly evolving field that is poised to transform various sectors of society and industry.
Strategic Focus on AI Cohorts
The recruitment will be organized into three specialized cohorts: Foundational AI, which will delve into theoretical frameworks; Applied AI, focused on practical solutions; and Responsible AI with Cybersecurity, which aims to prioritize ethical practices and secure digital environments. According to a statement from the university, these new hires are expected to start joining the faculty in the fall of 2026.
This initiative builds upon the existing strengths of Ohio State, where approximately 300 scholars currently engage in AI-related research across multiple disciplines. The university previously established the AI(X) Hub, a center dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in artificial intelligence.
Enhancing AI Education for Future Graduates
The addition of these faculty members is part of a broader strategy to integrate AI into the educational curriculum at Ohio State. Central to this approach is the AI Fluency initiative, which aims to equip every student graduating from the Class of 2029 and onwards with the skills to apply AI principles within their respective fields.
