Micron Delays Fab Construction Timeline by Years, Urgent Update

URGENT UPDATE: Micron’s ambitious plans for semiconductor fabrication plants in Clay have just been delayed by years, according to a newly released timeline in the project’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). The company announced that while tree clearing will commence this year, construction for its four fabs is now set to lag significantly behind earlier projections.

Under the revised schedule, the start of construction for Fab 1 is now pushed to the second quarter of 2028, with operations not expected to begin until the third quarter of 2030—a delay of two years. Similarly, Fab 2 will commence construction two years later, starting in the last quarter of 2030 and projected to open in the last quarter of 2033, marking a three-year setback from previous expectations.

The timeline for Fab 3 has also changed, with its construction now slated to begin in the third quarter of 2035, a two-year shift, while Fab 4 will see a slight delay of one quarter, expected to be completed by 2041.

These delays have significant implications for the local community, as the revised construction schedule for Fabs 1 and 2 means the arrival of operational workers at the Micron campus will be postponed. Consequently, the initiation of construction for essential facilities such as childcare, healthcare, and recreation centers has been adjusted; childcare construction will now begin in 2028 instead of 2026, and the health and recreation centers will see their timelines shift from 2030 to 2032.

Additionally, securing warehouse space will now be targeted for November 2028, due to the later initiation of wafer production. The entire construction process is expected to unfold in stages over the next 16 years, contingent on receiving the necessary permits and approvals.

Despite these challenges, the final report highlights a strong potential for job creation, estimating that the manufacturing facility will generate over 9,000 permanent onsite operational jobs by 2045. “Despite these potential construction schedule changes, final construction on the Micron Campus including Fab 4 would still be completed in 2041,” the FEIS states, emphasizing that ramping up to full production across all four fabs will still occur by the end of 2045.

As Micron navigates these significant delays, the broader implications for both the semiconductor industry and the local economy are profound. Stakeholders are advised to stay tuned for further updates as the company moves forward with its revised plans.
