Marin Catholic Volleyball Rallies to NCS Final with Strong Win

UPDATE: The Marin Catholic girls volleyball team has clinched a spot in the North Coast Section Open Division championship, bouncing back from a tough defeat in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) final. Just 12 days ago, the Wildcats fell short against Redwood, but they responded with a commanding victory over sixth-seeded Campolindo, winning 25-21, 23-25, 25-7, 25-16 on Wednesday night in Kentfield, California.

Coach Nick Honrada expressed pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “Suffering any loss like that is so heartbreaking. But for us to come back and practice and get better and leave that in the dust is really great.” The Wildcats, boasting a record of 25-6, will enter the NCS final on Saturday, October 28, at 7 PM against fourth-seeded Branson.

Marin Catholic’s journey to the final has been marked by determination. Following their MCAL loss, the Wildcats maintained focus during practice, which was evident in their strong performance against Campolindo. Sophomore outside hitter Carolina Delaney led the charge with 20 kills, emphasizing the team’s intensity: “Every practice we were focused. It showed tonight how we practiced.”

Senior outside hitter Krystal Huff, who is evaluating an offer from Norfolk State in Virginia, contributed 15 kills and made several crucial plays that kept the momentum in Marin Catholic’s favor. The Wildcats’ success can also be attributed to junior libero Aubrey Marne, whose serves and defensive skills were pivotal in the match.

The Wildcats started slow but quickly regained composure, winning the first set with a crucial seven-point run. They faced challenges in the second set, but dominated the third, establishing a firm lead they did not relinquish. “In the third and fourth sets we were able to keep the momentum and push through,” said Huff, reflecting on her determination to support her team in her final season.

As the Wildcats celebrated their semifinal victory, the Branson coaching staff was present, having just defeated Redwood in their match. Marin Catholic and Branson have faced off twice this season, with each team securing a win. Their last encounter was a stark reminder; Branson triumphed in the NCS final last year, and the Wildcats are eager to turn the tables this time at home.

With a remarkable eight-match home win streak on the line, Marin Catholic is poised for a fierce battle in the NCS final. The Wildcats have a storied legacy, having claimed eight consecutive NCS championships from 2014-2022, and are determined to reclaim their status at the top.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to rally behind the team as they prepare for this critical matchup. The outcome of the final will not only determine the championship but also serve as a testament to the Wildcats’ perseverance and growth throughout the season.
