UPDATE: A groundbreaking boxing event in London showcased unity and diversity as young Jewish and Muslim boxers from Israel confronted stereotypes and promoted peace. The Gloves and Doves event, held last week at the JW3 cultural centre, featured an Israeli team of six boxers—two Muslims and four Jews—competing against British opponents in a powerful display of solidarity.
The atmosphere was charged with the message of coexistence, as the venue was adorned with Israeli flags and the motto “fight for peace” displayed in English, Arabic, and Hebrew. “We are here for peace, we are here for unity,” said Tony Milch, founder of Gloves and Doves, emphasizing the event’s mission to bridge cultural divides.
This year marked the second consecutive time young Israeli athletes traveled to the UK for this initiative, with last year’s event hosted in Camden. Milch, a British-Israeli who relocated to Israel in 2019, expressed the project’s goal: “to bring young people from different backgrounds together” and illustrate that Israel is a multicultural society.
Many attendees were surprised to learn about the diverse Arab presence in Israel, with Milch noting that some spectators approached them, stating, “We never knew.” He passionately believes that changing perceptions is vital, stating, “If we can change one mind at a time, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to do.”
The evening was officially supported by the World Boxing Council (WBC), a significant endorsement for the event, which was both ticketed and live-streamed. Milch highlighted boxing’s unique ability to foster mutual respect and connection, stating, “It brings you together in a powerful way.”
The event also welcomed special guest, Alireza Ghadiri, an undefeated professional boxer of Iranian descent, who engaged with the fighters and presented the ALEXANDER MASHKEVITCH AWARD for boxer of the night to Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli from northern Israel. Majid, the youngest participant, impressed the crowd with his skills.
In a showdown that captivated many, British boxer Charles Whitewood, 25, reflected on his match against an Israeli opponent from Hadera, saying, “We didn’t trade many words, we traded punches instead.” He praised the camaraderie, stating, “There’s a lot of love in boxing, and it was felt that night. We were brothers.”
The Gloves and Doves team continues to gain attention on social media, with many eager to follow their journey toward promoting peace. The message from this remarkable event resonates with a global audience, reminding us of the power of sports to unite and inspire even in the most challenging times.
