First Baptist Dallas Rebuilds After Devastating Fire; Team United

UPDATE: A four-alarm fire devastated the historic sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, last year, and reconstruction efforts are not expected to complete until Easter 2028. As the church navigates this significant crisis, the resilience of its staff has emerged as a pivotal factor in maintaining operations and community support.

Following the fire, staff members faced considerable challenges, with many feeling “scattered” in the aftermath. As of August, the church offices were still without permanent power, according to Ben Lovvorn, the church’s senior executive pastor. In response, church leadership has prioritized effective communication to keep both staff and congregation informed and engaged during this critical rebuilding phase.

“We’ve been very purposeful about communicating with our staff — and our congregation — so that they know and understand what’s going on, and that they are a part of the process,” Lovvorn stated. “At other organizations, this situation would lead to tremendous turnover, but our entire team has stayed intact. That has provided consistency and encouragement to our 16,000 church members.”

The church’s ability to maintain its workforce speaks volumes about the workplace culture fostered at First Baptist. Lovvorn emphasized the importance of having the right people in place to manage crises effectively. “Finding those right people — and getting them in the right seats on the bus — is key to tackling whatever obstacles you’re presented with along the way,” he remarked.

The shared mission among staff members, regardless of their roles, creates a strong sense of purpose. “Whether they’re a minister or work in our accounting department or in the facilities department, they’re part of something greater,” Lovvorn explained. This collective sense of purpose is reinforced through initiatives like monthly leadership luncheons, where the team recently enjoyed a meal from Babe’s Chicken, and “staff chapel” sessions that encourage prayer and reflection.

Over its more than 155 years in downtown Dallas, First Baptist has experienced both triumphs and tribulations. Lovvorn noted, “There have been good times and difficult times, but God has always been faithful in providing for us and seeing us through every season.”

As the church looks forward to the long journey ahead, the lessons learned during this crisis will continue to shape its future. The community’s unwavering support and the dedication of its staff are vital to the rebuilding process.
