A new initiative in Metro Detroit is rekindling the playful spirit of recess for adults. The “Recess Club,” spearheaded by wellness advocate Melissa Coulier, hosts gatherings twice a month, encouraging participants to step away from technology and reconnect with nature and one another. These meetups aim to foster community and well-being through outdoor activities.
Coulier emphasizes the significance of nature for healing, stating, “Being in nature is important for healing.” The club organizes events within a 60-mile radius of Detroit, exploring various picturesque areas across Michigan. The concept is straightforward: adults come together outdoors to engage in movement and socialization, creating meaningful connections among participants.
Regular attendee Alex May highlights the social benefits, saying, “It’s a great opportunity to spend time with friends and meet new people.” Since joining, May has made several friends through the club, noting, “They showed up, and I have three friends.” This reflects the club’s success in fostering a sense of community among its members.
For Coulier, who is married to actor Dave Coulier, the idea for the club stems from her personal wellness practices. “Every day we take a walk after dinner with the dogs. It’s having that exhale after a long day,” she explains. The gatherings promote not only physical activity but also mental well-being, which May affirms by stating that participants “definitely feel healthier, lighter.”
The Recess Club focuses on unstructured play and social interaction, reminiscent of childhood recess but tailored for adults. “We can’t underestimate the power of walking around the block, googling a trail, and getting out with your family and friends,” Coulier adds. This approach allows members to engage in fun activities without a rigid agenda while enjoying a break from their screens.
The club is open to new members, with meetups taking place at various locations throughout the Metro Detroit area. Interested individuals can sign up to join and rediscover the joy of play and connection in a supportive environment. The Recess Club illustrates how simple, joyful activities can significantly enhance well-being and foster community among adults.
