Esko’s Marisa Pender Reflects on Championship Glory and Life

UPDATE: Marisa Pender, a standout athlete from Esko, Minnesota, is celebrating her remarkable journey in high school sports, highlighting the profound impact these experiences have had on her life and character development.

In a passionate reflection, Pender shared, “I don’t know whether people realize the long-term benefits of high school sports. It’s such a valuable tool for character and leadership development.” Her sentiment resonates with many, as she recounts the immense support from coaches and the community during her athletic career.

Growing up in the small town of Esko, Pender, the oldest of four daughters, became a local sports icon. The Shady family moved to Esko when she was just six years old, and Marisa quickly immersed herself in various activities, including gymnastics, soccer, and basketball.

Marisa’s athletic prowess shone brightly in cross country, where she made history by helping the Esko girls’ team qualify for the Minnesota State High School League cross country championships for six consecutive years. Her dual-sport fall season also included a state appearance in soccer in 2011.

“My goal my sophomore year was to medal,” she recalled, but in a stunning twist, she ended up winning the title. “I was more surprised than anyone. I never felt as good as I did in that race. It was just the most euphoric moment.” That euphoric feeling returned during her senior year when she and her teammates secured the team title by 35 points over runner-up Annandale.

Throughout her high school career, Pender earned 18 varsity letters and became a 14-time state medalist, showcasing her versatility as an athlete. She also excelled in track and field, competing in every event except discus and shot put.

Despite the challenges, including a fierce rivalry with Rebekah Dahlman’s Braham High School, Marisa’s determination never wavered. Her friendship with fellow athlete Savanna Trapp, who played for UCLA, exemplified the strong bonds formed through sports.

After graduating in 2013, Pender pursued her dream of competing at the collegiate level, accepting a track and field scholarship to South Dakota State University. Although she faced injuries, her resilience shone through with strong performances during her sophomore and junior years.

Today, Marisa embraces a new athletic challenge as she competes in CrossFit, training alongside her husband, Michael Pender, and raising their two children, Jackson and Kiara. Recently, she achieved another milestone by earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2023.

“High school and athletics laid the foundation for who I am. They provided me with the Finnish word ‘sisu.’ It’s determination, perseverance, grit, and tenacity,” Pender stated.

Pender’s inspiring journey highlights the significant role high school sports play in shaping character and fostering lifelong skills. As she continues to make strides in her personal and professional life, her story serves as a testament to the enduring impact of athletic participation.
