URGENT UPDATE: A young suspect, aged approximately 13 to 14 years, has stolen an SUV with four children inside and crashed it in Philadelphia. This alarming incident unfolded around 11 p.m. Thursday when the children’s mother stepped into King Laundromat on the 6700 block of Castor Avenue.
Authorities report that the mother left her Honda CR-V running with her children in the back seat. When she returned, the vehicle was gone. According to Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department, this theft seems to be a “crime of opportunity,” as the suspect likely noticed the running vehicle and seized the chance to steal it.
The SUV was driven about half a mile before the suspect crashed into a parked van while attempting to turn onto Comly Street. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, noting that the young suspect fled on foot after realizing the children were inside the vehicle.
“It’s shocking to think that this could happen,” said Chief Inspector Small. “We believe once the suspect realized there were children in the back seat, they exited the vehicle and ran away.” Fortunately, the four children have since been reunited with their mother, but police continue to search for the suspect.
This incident highlights the serious risks associated with leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a brief moment. Investigators stress that it only takes a split second for a situation to escalate dangerously.
As authorities ramp up their search for the young thief, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any information related to this incident. This developing story serves as a reminder of the risks of vehicle theft, particularly when children are involved.
Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation as police work to apprehend the suspect and ensure the safety of the community.
