Urgent Repairs Underway for Sinkhole Near Clarkston Roundabout

URGENT UPDATE: Crews are actively repairing a significant sinkhole near the Clarkston roundabout, with repairs expected to conclude by November 7. The sinkhole, caused by a collapsed underground storm line in September, is located in the right lane of a heavily trafficked street near Bridge, Diagonal, and Second streets, just west of the Interstate Blue Bridge.

According to Clarkston Public Works Director Mike Dimmick, “Every day, it’s looking better,” emphasizing the urgency of the repairs to prevent future issues with the roundabout. This location serves as a crucial route for one of the busiest areas in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, especially during the holiday shopping season.

The construction work is being carried out by M.L. Albright and Sons under Knife River, the primary contractor for the project. Next week, pending favorable weather, Knife River plans to begin paving the area, which has raised questions about the costs involved in the repairs. As of now, it remains unclear who will ultimately cover the expenses, with discussions ongoing among city officials and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“The storm line and manhole are being replaced, and everything within the roundabout will be new,” Dimmick confirmed, providing reassurance to residents and commuters. “There are no more sinkholes, thank God.”

Officials are urging the public for patience as the repairs progress, thanking community members for their understanding during this critical time. The right lane is expected to fully reopen as soon as the work is completed, improving traffic flow in a zone that sees increased congestion during the holidays due to nearby stores like Costco, Walmart, and Albertsons.

This situation is developing rapidly, and residents are encouraged to stay informed about further updates. For now, all eyes are on the crews as they work diligently to resolve this urgent issue.
