Golden mussels, known for clogging water systems and harming local wildlife, have now reached as far south as Los Angeles. Local Assembly member Rhodesia Ransom voiced her concerns, stating, “We want to ensure that we’re doing everything we can to stop the spread of golden mussels.” This invasive species poses significant risks not only to the ecosystem but also to critical infrastructure throughout the state.
The infestation, initially concentrated in San Joaquin County, has expanded dramatically, raising fears about its effects on agriculture and flood control systems. “This can impact goods movement. It impacts the infrastructure and impacts our environment,” Ransom added.
In response, state authorities have allocated $20 million in funding aimed at establishing education programs, inspections, and decontamination sites. Local officials, including Paul Canepa, San Joaquin County Supervisor, are collaborating to create public awareness and operational support to mitigate the mussel invasion. “We need to make sure that those [pipes] don’t get plugged, because then we could have local flooding,” he warned.
The severity of the infestation is underscored by photographic evidence shared by Andrew Genasci, executive director of the San Joaquin Farm Bureau. He described how these mussels attach to pipes, creating blockages that threaten vital agricultural operations and water resources. “If you’re not able to produce, you don’t have a need for employees. The impact will be felt all the way down the line,” Genasci cautioned.
Without immediate and effective measures, the golden mussel infestation could have devastating economic and environmental consequences for the California Delta and surrounding communities. The situation remains critical as local and state officials mobilize resources to address the growing threat.
