Texas Tech’s backup quarterback, Will Hammond, is sidelined for the remainder of the season after sustaining a torn ACL in his right knee. The injury occurred during the No. 13 Red Raiders’ dominant 42-0 victory over Oklahoma State on October 21, 2023. Hammond was filling in for starting quarterback Behren Morton, who is anticipated to return for the team’s upcoming match against Kansas State.
Coach Joey McGuire expressed his optimism regarding Hammond’s recovery, stating on Monday that the player is expected to be ready for the next season, although he may not participate in spring practice. The Red Raiders currently hold a record of 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference.
“It’s going to be somebody who is totally dedicated to getting back and attacking the situation,” McGuire said. “There’s nobody that attacks anything like Will Hammond. I feel really confident that he’ll have himself ready to go.”
With Hammond out, Mitch Griffis will step into the backup quarterback role. Griffis, who did not play football last year, previously appeared in nine games for Wake Forest in 2023. He made an immediate impact after Hammond’s departure from the Oklahoma State game, throwing for a touchdown and running for another score.
Morton has faced his share of injuries this season, initially injuring his knee in a 67-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff during the season opener. He re-aggravated the injury in a subsequent game against Kansas on October 11 and was also knocked out of a match against Utah after receiving a hit to the helmet.
As the Red Raiders prepare for their matchup against Kansas State, the team will need to adjust to the loss of Hammond while hoping for Morton’s return. The implications of these injuries will be critical as Texas Tech aims to maintain its strong performance in the conference.
Fans and analysts will be keeping a close eye on the team’s quarterback situation as they continue their pursuit of a successful season.
