Nick Mangold, Former Jets Center, Passes Away at 41 from Kidney Disease

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41, following complications related to kidney disease. The team confirmed his death on Sunday, stating that he died on the evening of March 9, 2024. This tragic news comes less than two weeks after Mangold publicly shared his diagnosis and the need for a kidney transplant.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Mangold revealed that he had been diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006, which led to his chronic kidney disease. He expressed optimism about his situation, stating, “I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.” He had reached out to the community in search of a donor with type O blood, as he did not have any relatives available to donate.

Woody Johnson, the owner of the Jets, paid tribute to Mangold, describing him as “the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade” and highlighting his leadership and toughness, which defined an era of Jets football. Johnson added, “Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Mangold’s career with the Jets began when he was selected as a first-round draft pick in 2006, after playing college football at Ohio State University.
