Renowned Engineer Alden Munson Passes Away at 83

Alden Vincent Munson Jr., a respected engineer and long-time resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away on August 29, 2025, due to complications following heart surgery. He was 83 years old and leaves behind a legacy marked by significant contributions to the fields of engineering and intelligence.

Born on April 9, 1942, in Kingsburg, California, Alden was the son of Alden and Marguerite (Rouch) Munson. His family later relocated to Springville, where they operated a logging and development business. Much of Alden’s childhood was spent in the mountainous regions near Camp Nelson, which fostered his deep connection to nature.

Alden’s academic journey began at Mount Whitney High School in Visalia, where he excelled in both football and music, playing the trombone. He continued his education at the College of the Sequoias before earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State College. It was there that he met his future wife, Jane Munson. Alden later obtained a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and pursued further studies in computer science at UCLA. He also attended executive programs at both Harvard and Stanford.

His professional career commenced in 1966 at The Aerospace Corporation. In 1973, he joined TRW, where he played a pivotal role in several major programs. Alden’s expertise eventually led him to the position of Vice President of TRW’s System Development Division. After retiring in 1997, he took on senior leadership roles at Litton Industries.

Alden was recognized for his groundbreaking work in the intelligence sector, receiving the title of Pioneer of National Reconnaissance from the National Reconnaissance Office in 2000. He continued his impactful career as the Deputy Director for Acquisitions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence from 2007 to 2010, where he was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal in 2009.

Despite his retirement, Alden remained active in the intelligence community, consulting, serving on various boards, and mentoring many aspiring professionals. His colleagues admired him not only for his intellect but also for his dynamic personality and dry sense of humor.

Outside of work, Alden was a passionate outdoor enthusiast. He loved water-skiing with family and friends, spending countless days on the Stockton Delta, and camping at Tower Park. His lifelong passion for snow skiing was evident as he had already booked a heli-ski trip for the upcoming year. He cherished skiing with his grandsons and often participated in the BTST Men’s ski trips. Alden also had a keen interest in model trains, being an active member of the Los Angeles Model Railroad Society.

Traveling was another of Alden’s great loves. He and Jane enjoyed exploring various destinations, with New York City being a particular favorite. They frequently attended musical theatre performances, both on and off Broadway.

Alden is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Munson; his daughter, Kathryn (Katie) Bechtel (Greg); and his two grandsons, Max and Sam Bechtel. He also leaves behind his sister, Marguerite (Pegi) Hover (Dick); his brother, Charles; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Kathryn Munson.

A Celebration of Life will take place on November 7, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Community Church, located at 303 S. Peck Ave. A reception will follow the service, providing family and friends an opportunity to honor Alden’s remarkable life and legacy.
