Woman Assaulted in Chicago’s Loop Thanks Good Samaritan for Help

UPDATE: A woman is expressing profound gratitude to a good Samaritan who intervened during a brutal assault in Chicago’s Loop on September 27, 2023. Sierra Ruggiero, 25, was targeted by a man on a bicycle who pushed her onto a busy street and attempted to sexually assault her around 7:20 p.m.

According to Ruggiero and a Chicago police report, the incident unfolded as she left the La Salle Blue Line station and walked west on Ida B. Wells Drive. The assailant pushed her over a short railing into oncoming traffic. Luckily, Alx Taylor, a 21-year-old witness, saw the attack and shouted at the attacker, causing him to flee west on his bicycle.

“Once he ran away, she came up to me, she checked to see if I was OK. She was the kindest soul,” said Ruggiero, who suffered bruises to her legs and tailbone. Taylor remained with her until paramedics arrived and offered emotional support. “I felt so bad for her. It was awful just to see,” Taylor added.

Ruggiero, who moved to Chicago from Florida two years ago, expressed her ongoing trauma. “I don’t think I actually will ever fully mentally recover from this,” she stated. “This experience has changed my perspective on how I operate in the city moving forward.”

Despite being vigilant while walking in the city—keeping her phone in her pocket and avoiding headphones—Ruggiero felt unprepared for the violence. Her stainless steel water bottle, which she uses for self-defense, was knocked from her hands during the attack. She now considers carrying pepper spray or another self-defense tool.

Residents in the Loop are increasingly concerned about safety, especially as Ruggiero has heard reports of a man dubbed the “Loop puncher,” accused of recent unprovoked attacks on women. “I never thought this would happen to me because I am so self-aware walking around the city,” she remarked.

Ruggiero is taking action by posting a video on TikTok to raise awareness about her experience and the need for community vigilance, as her attacker remains at large. She is also seeking security camera footage of the incident, which will aid the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is described as wearing all black clothing and a blue surgical face mask while riding a small bicycle. A spokesperson for the Chicago police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

As details continue to emerge, Ruggiero’s story highlights the urgent need for safety measures in urban environments. The emotional scars from this incident are profound, serving as a reminder that vigilance is crucial, even for the most aware individuals.
