In response, Derek Tran, a representative for California’s 45th congressional district, has called for immediate legislative action to guarantee that troops receive their paychecks on time. Tran, who enlisted in the Army at 18, shared his personal journey from a refugee background to a position in Congress. He explained how a steady paycheck while serving was crucial for his family during challenging times. His first piece of legislation was the Protect Veteran Jobs Act, aimed at reinstating veterans who were wrongfully dismissed from federal employment.
In light of the shutdown, Tran, alongside Congressman Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico, sent a letter to Speaker Johnson urging House Republicans to return to work and pass legislation ensuring timely payment for troops before the October 15 deadline. Tran has also endorsed bipartisan legislation designed to secure military pay during government shutdowns.
He expressed his concern for military families, noting that over 225,000 active duty and reserve personnel in California face the risk of missing their paychecks. Tran highlighted the broader implications of this situation, stating, “The greatest nation with the greatest military in the world should not be putting our troops and their families in this predicament.”
