Michael Allio Opens Up About Faith and Grief After Wife’s Death

Michael Allio Shares Raw Faith Struggles After Wife Laura’s Death

Michael Allio, reality star from The Bachelorette, is revealing the emotional “up and down” nature of his faith journey since the death of his wife, Laura Ritter-Allio, who passed away in January 2019 after battling breast cancer. At 41, Allio credits his belief in a higher power for helping him navigate one of life’s deepest losses while raising their young son, James.

In an exclusive interview, Allio opened up about his grieving process and how his faith remains central, despite its challenges. “Visualization helps,” he explained, emphasizing his firm hope of seeing Laura again beyond this life. “Whether it’s God or the belief in a higher being, I know for a fact I’m going to see Laura again, and that brings me relief.”

Transforming Grief Into Purpose Through Parenting and Writing

After Laura’s passing when James was just 2 years old, Allio committed himself to creating meaningful memories for his son, knowing Laura would disapprove of him wasting time in sorrow. “It’s all about what kind of stories am I going to collect to be able to tell her?” he said.

Spurred by this mission, Allio recently released his debut children’s book, Where the Wild Heart Grows, an emotionally rich story addressing courage, loss, and growing through hardship. He hopes the book teaches his son and other children resilience—not avoidance of pain but learning to walk through it.

“One thing I wanted to make sure I did was to not teach my son how to avoid pain, but learn how to walk with it,” Allio shared. By openly acknowledging his own struggles, he fosters a “strong bond” and a safe environment for James.

Faith Is an Ongoing Journey for The Bachelorette Alum

Raised Catholic and now occasionally attending church with his son, Allio admits his faith has fluctuated. “It’s a journey,” he said. Yet, he remains devoted to being present for his son and openly discussing Laura. “He was two when she passed away, so I don’t want him to feel guilty that he doesn’t remember those things, but he does know he’s going to see her again.”

Since appearing on The Bachelorette Season 17 with Katie Thurston in 2021 and competing on Bachelor in Paradise in 2022, Allio’s life has been a balance of public spotlight and private healing. Now James is thriving in the 3rd grade, keeping busy with karate, baseball, and basketball.

“He got his mom’s brains,” Michael said proudly. “He’s witty and curious, and I’ve always tried to instill kindness, curiosity, and empathy—to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes and don’t rush to judgment.”

Looking Ahead With Hope and Courage

Michael Allio’s story is one of resilience that many Americans facing loss can relate to. His candid updates remind us all that grief can be endured not just through sorrow but through faith, purposeful parenting, and creative expression.
