Mable Smidt, Beloved Milford Resident, Dies at 86

The Milford community is in mourning following the passing of Mable Smidt on April 26, 2026. Known for her straightforward nature and generous heart, Smidt was a treasured figure whose kindness and resilience touched countless lives across Nebraska and the Midwest.

Born October 28, 1939, in Bliss, Nebraska, Mable Marie Harkins was a lifelong hardworking woman who never shied away from speaking her mind. She grew up alongside five siblings and throughout her life carried strong ties to family and community.

A Life Defined by Family, Hard Work, and Community

Mable’s early years in Bliss laid the foundation for a life marked by deep dedication to those around her. She attended Bartlett High School and married her first husband, Bernard Lee Fulkerth, in 1959. Together, they raised five children and moved through several states including Michigan and Iowa.

For three decades, many people fondly remember Mable as a familiar face at workplaces such as the Bil-Mar turkey factory, Jo & By’s Pub, and the Taco House. Her easygoing personality and friendly demeanor made her a beloved community figure well beyond Milford’s city limits.

Enduring Bonds and Lasting Legacy

Later in life, Mable found love again with her second husband, Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt. Their shared adventures and deep connection remained a cherished part of her story until his passing. Mable often spoke passionately of Darryl and carried his memory with respect and love.

She is survived by her five children: Bernie Fulkerth of Hartley; Daniel Fulkerth of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Randy Fulkerth of Alta; Dean Fulkerth of Milford; and Tammy Naab of Milford. In addition, she leaves two stepchildren, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Community and Family to Honor Mable Smidt’s Memory

A celebration of life event honoring both Mable and Darryl Smidt is scheduled for May 9, 2026, at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford with visitation from 1-3 p.m. and services beginning at 3 p.m.

The family encourages donations in Mable’s memory to the Abben Cancer Center in Spencer or Lakes Regional Hospice in Spirit Lake, both organizations that provided compassionate care during her final months.

“We are deeply grateful to InHome Personal Care, Abben Cancer Center, and Lakes Regional Hospice for the exceptional dignity and compassion they showed Mable,” the family shared.

Mable Smidt’s passing marks the loss of a bold, generous woman whose values and warmth will resonate throughout generations. Her enduring legacy exemplifies how one person’s kindness and honesty can profoundly shape a community’s spirit.
