Briarwood Christian Lions rally past top-seeded Pelham Panthers to reach Final Four
PELHAM – In a dramatic quarterfinal showdown drenched in rain, Briarwood Christian Lions sealed a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the No. 1 ranked Pelham Panthers with two electrifying late goals on May 1 at Ned Bearden Stadium.
With just 1:02 left in regulation and trailing 0-1, Briarwood’s Andrew Kunard pounced during a frantic scramble inside the box to tie the game, igniting hope for the visitors and their traveling fans. Then, in the closing seconds of the extra period, Quinn Corcoran seized a breakaway chance, blasting a near-post shot from 25 yards out that slipped just past Pelham’s keeper, clinching the upset and sending the Lions into the Final Four.
The rain intensified in the second half, muddying the pace, but it did not slow either team’s determination. The Panthers opened scoring early in the first half through Bakr Al-Sugi, capitalizing on a well-placed long ball to take a 1-0 lead at halftime. Pelham controlled much of the game, applying pressure and holding the advantage until Briarwood’s late surge.
Both squads showed grit and resilience, with Briarwood overcoming early pressure and multiple defensive blocks led by Jair Camargo to stay in contention. The rain-soaked conditions challenged passing and footing, but Briarwood’s late-game execution turned the tide.
When overtime began, Pelham threatened to regain momentum, launching several solid scoring chances. However, skilled Briarwood defender Gavin Patterson thwarted a late corner kick, immediately initiating a counterattack that ended with Corcoran’s decisive winning goal.
The Lions now advance to face the winner between Spanish Fort and St. Paul’s Episcopal in the semifinals at John Hunt Park on Thursday, May 7. This victory caps a gritty postseason run for Briarwood, which has previously survived intense shootouts against Northridge and Spain Park during the season.
“This was a true test for our team — battling the No. 1 seed in tough conditions and never giving up,” said Briarwood coach following the game. “Our players’ heart and perseverance carried us through.”
For fans across the United States, Briarwood’s comeback exemplifies the drama and unpredictability of high-stakes soccer playoffs. For Alaska readers tracking national sports, this nail-biting upset underscores the excitement of March Madness-style tournaments unfolding far beyond traditional powerhouses.
As the Lions prepare for their semifinal clash, all eyes will be on the resilience and clutch performances that have defined their season. With momentum firmly on their side, Briarwood’s journey promises more high-drama moments ahead.
