Edgartown Council on Aging Announces Full Schedule of May Events, Health Clinics, and Cultural Programs
The Edgartown Council on Aging (ECOA) is delivering an action-packed May with a wide array of health services, social activities, and cultural events at The Anchors community center. The center will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day but reopens with an active weekly schedule designed to support seniors and community members.
Starting immediately, residents can participate in regular wellness classes, shuttle services, and group activities like yoga, Tai Chi, bridge, and Mah Jongg. Highlights include seated yoga Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m., followed by bowling and lunch at the Barn Bistro with a special $10 price exclusively for Edgartown residents.
Critical Health Services and Clinics
ECOA is prioritizing senior health with several drop-in and appointment-based clinics throughout May. On May 5, a wellness clinic including blood pressure checks is open from noon to 1 p.m. Two special sessions for haircuts by Dee Dee on May 11 and May 18 offer cuts at $20 and cuts plus blow dry for $30.
Hearing evaluations by Shawn Woodbrey of At Home Hearing are available by appointment on May 13, while Sight Loss Services Cape Cod’s Executive Director, Rhonda Garan, visits on May 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. providing important resources for residents living with vision impairment.
Transportation and Social Connectivity
The ECOA continues its vital Edgartown Shopping Shuttle service every Tuesday and Friday, which picks up residents at home and transports them to local essentials such as Stop & Shop, the pharmacy, the post office, and The Anchors itself. Advance registration is required by Friday noon for Tuesday rides, and by Wednesday noon for Friday services.
Meals are served Tuesday and Friday at noon, with reservations required by noon the prior day. In tandem, there is a strong social focus with weekly Men’s Group meetups on Fridays and Ladies Coffee every Thursday at 11 a.m. creating essential community ties for local seniors.
Engaging Entertainment and Informational Events
On May 14 at 1 p.m., pianist Adele Dreyer delivers a special “Keys to Spring” performance refreshing spirits with live music. Later in the month, residents can attend a PBS documentary screening of “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive” on May 22 at 2 p.m., followed by a live Zoom discussion to deepen understanding of aging.
The Council on Aging also hosts Coffee with a Cop on May 12 at 11 a.m., fostering dialogue between law enforcement and community members. On May 19 at 12:15 p.m., Patti Roads from the Edgartown Surveyors Office will explain details about the residential exemption process during lunch, ensuring seniors stay informed about their property tax benefits.
The month closes with cultural flair as musician David Mintz, supported by a Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council grant, performs songs from the “Great American Songbook” during lunch on May 29.
