Spartans Baseball Struggles at Home with 1-3 Record After Key Losses

The Southwestern Community College Spartans faced a tough week at home, finishing 1-3 in two intense doubleheaders that showcased moments of brilliance but ultimately ended in setback. Despite a standout grand slam by Wilson Villanueva in game two against Indian Hills, the Spartans fell 14-8, following a mixed performance that saw them drop three of four games on their home field.

In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, the Spartans earned a 7-4 victory over Indian Hills. SWCC struck early for a run in the opening inning and steadily built their lead with runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Key contributors included Anibal Montanez and Jackson McDanel with two runs each, supported by hits from Dustin Bennett, Wyatt Throckmorton, and Brayden Mitchell. Pitching duties were split between Ryan Boklmann, who struck out five and allowed three runs, and Eliot Bergollo, who allowed just one run with no strikeouts.

However, the Spartans’ momentum didn’t hold in game two. After an explosive first inning that included a grand slam by Villanueva following back-to-back hit-by-pitches and loaded bases, the team faltered. Indian Hills surged back with five runs in the second inning and four in the third. The Spartans struggled to keep pace, managing only isolated runs scattered through the middle innings, including solo homers from Elias Culzac and Ismael Bencosme. The bullpen, led by Alex Parish who struck out four across three innings, was heavily taxed but could not contain the offensive onslaught.

Later, Iowa Western, boasting a commanding 38-9 overall record and 11-1 conference mark, swept their doubleheader against the Spartans by scores of 5-4 and 14-7. While SWCC briefly held a 4-1 lead in the first game’s fourth inning, a costly fielding error allowed the host Reivers to rally back, ultimately scoring the winning run in the ninth inning. The Spartans’ resilience was clear as they kept the games competitive despite being underdogs.

With an overall record now at 17-33 and conference struggles deepening at 1-9, the Spartans face a critical stretch ahead. They return to Indian Hills for a doubleheader today and then host Iowa Western tomorrow, with postseason regional championships looming May 7-9.

This series of home losses underscores the urgency for Southwestern to tighten defense and maintain offensive consistency as the playoffs approach. Fans and players alike will be watching closely to see if the Spartans can rebound and build momentum before postseason play begins.
