UPDATE: The Potosi Trojans staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Bayless Bronchos, clinching the Class 4, District 2 boys basketball championship with a final score of 57-53 on Saturday evening. After trailing by as much as 15 points in the first quarter, Potosi’s resilience shone through as they outscored Bayless 20-9 in the final period.
The Trojans, now boasting an impressive 21-5 record, faced skepticism after losing standout player Carter Whitley and two other seniors from last year’s final four team. However, they silenced critics with a powerful performance fueled by defensive pressure and timely scoring. Sophomore guard Rhenn Mapes emerged as a key player, scoring nine of his 22 points in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
“We faced a lot of criticism coming into the season without Carter,” said senior forward Peyton Rowe, who contributed 17 points to the win. “But we knew we could still perform at the highest level. Winning a district championship in my senior year means a whole lot.”
The game began with a fierce display from Bayless, who took an early lead with a flurry of three-pointers. They stormed ahead to a 27-12 advantage by the end of the first quarter, leaving Potosi scrambling to regain control. Potosi head coach Jackson Conaway acknowledged the challenge posed by Bayless: “They came out and punched us in the mouth to start that first quarter. But that shows what kind of group we have. They didn’t quit.”
As the game progressed, Potosi made crucial adjustments, closing the gap to just four points by halftime. The Trojans capitalized on Bayless’s foul troubles and increased defensive intensity, forcing a staggering 21 turnovers throughout the game.
In a pivotal third quarter, Potosi took the lead for the first time at 53-50 with just over two minutes left on the clock. Mapes’s midcourt steal and subsequent layup electrified the home crowd, further swinging the momentum in Potosi’s favor.
Despite a valiant effort from Bayless, including senior guard Jyon Thomas with 18 points and Cameron Aikens, who posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, time was not on their side. Potosi finished strong, converting 8-of-13 free throws compared to Bayless’s 5-of-14, sealing their victory.
Potosi will carry this momentum into a state sectional rematch against Dexter on Tuesday at Farmington High School. The Trojans, riding a five-game win streak, are determined to continue their successful run despite losing key players earlier in the season.
“They just kept pushing and pushing,” Conaway added about his team’s relentless spirit. “We’re starting to figure it out late in the season.”
As Potosi celebrates this hard-fought victory, they prepare for the challenges ahead, showcasing the heart and determination that has defined their season.
