LISC Honors Community Leaders at New Jersey Achievement Awards

The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) New Jersey celebrated its 17th annual Neighborhood Achievement Awards on March 5, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. This prestigious event recognizes the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations dedicated to revitalizing under-resourced neighborhoods across New Jersey.

Executive Director of LISC New Jersey, Jorge Cruz, emphasized the importance of the awards, stating, “This is our way to take an opportunity to celebrate the individuals and organizations who are on the ground doing the work.” The event aimed to honor those who have made significant impacts in their communities.

Doors opened at 17:00, allowing attendees to explore the stadium before the ceremony commenced at 18:30. The event was hosted by Lisa Marie Falbo, who introduced several key speakers, including Cruz and Jessica Guilfoy, Vice President of LISC Programs. Special remarks were provided by Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell, highlighting the importance of community engagement.

The awards ceremony commenced with the presentation of the Exceptional Leadership Distinction Award. This accolade recognizes an individual whose exceptional leadership on the LISC New Jersey Board has significantly advanced the organization’s mission. The 2026 recipient was Ken Meyers, Community Development Market Manager at Synchrony Bank. A native of Jersey City, Meyers expressed his commitment to community service, stating, “The feeling of helping somebody start their business… is an amazing feeling, and you put your whole heart into it.”

Following this, the Exemplary Public Partner Award was presented to Senator Andy Kim, acknowledging his collaborative efforts to revitalize communities. A member of Kim’s team accepted the award on his behalf, and he shared a video message expressing gratitude for the recognition.

The Exemplary Private Partner Award honored the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation for its transformative investments in local communities. Samra Haider, who accepted the award, remarked, “The fact that someone we respect very much is honoring us is amazing.”

The ceremony also featured the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Vivian Cox Fraser, President and CEO of the Urban League of Essex County. Fraser shared her personal connection to community service, stating, “Helping members of the community is like helping members of your family.”

Finally, the Rhonda A. Lewis Inspirational Community Advocate Award was awarded to Tenisha Malcolm-Witt, Vice President of External Affairs for the Girl Scouts Heart of NJ and Founder of Outdoors On Purpose. This award recognizes her visionary leadership and advocacy for community revitalization.

The event not only celebrated remarkable achievements but also fostered a spirit of collaboration among community leaders, ensuring that the legacy of positive change continues to flourish across New Jersey.
