Tim Mazur Seizes Wrestling Comeback at Division III Districts

UPDATE: Tim Mazur has reignited his passion for wrestling and is making waves at the Division III district tournament in Independence. After losing his love for the sport due to a concussion that sidelined him for his junior year, Mazur’s return to the mat at Lake Catholic has been nothing short of spectacular.

Mazur, boasting a record of 38-5, secured two victories on the first day of the tournament, positioning himself for a shot at the state title. He will face Waynedale’s Sebastian Schmeltzer in a critical semifinal match on March 6, 2023. A win in this bout guarantees Mazur’s berth in the state tournament, a dream he thought was out of reach just a year ago.

“This is the overall goal,” Mazur stated. “That’d mean a lot to me. That’d be a good end to my high school career. That’s the reason I came to this school, to accomplish that goal.”

Mazur’s journey back to the sport has been an emotional one. “I had kind of fallen out of love with the sport,” he admitted. “This year I found the love for the sport again and am picking up where I left off my sophomore year.”

In addition to Mazur, Lake Catholic is well-represented in the semifinals, with seven wrestlers competing for district titles. Notable athletes include Chance Wuhr (113), Tyler Ineman (138), Giovanni Magistrelli (144), Tommy Slack (150), and Ben Mitchell (175).

Mazur’s impressive performance included a swift 43-second pin over Chippewa’s Drew Nesity and a decisive 10-3 decision against Ravenna Southeast’s Trevor Osborne. He has been projected as a potential state runner-up in the Division III, 132-pound class, according to Josh Lowe of Intermat.

Meanwhile, other schools are also showcasing their talent. Berkshire sent seven wrestlers to the tournament, all of whom secured at least one win on Day 1. Standout Danny Tiller (190) dominated with a pin and a 20-4 technical fall, advancing to face Crestwood’s Michael Berquist in the semifinals.

Beachwood is another school to watch, led by senior Caleb Greenwood and junior Justin Elwell. Elwell, who missed last year’s postseason due to weight issues, is determined to make an impact. “This year I’m proving how good I am, and it feels great,” he said.

As the tournament progresses, wrestling fans are buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming semifinal matchups, which promise to deliver high-stakes action and thrilling performances.
