Austin Peay Falls 5-4 in Extras to Cincinnati in Heartbreaker

BREAKING: In a dramatic extra-inning showdown, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball team was edged out by the Cincinnati Bearcats, falling 5-4 at UC Baseball Stadium earlier today, February 27, 2026. The loss marks a tough start to the three-game weekend series, leaving APSU fans reeling.

The game took a thrilling turn in the bottom of the tenth inning when Cincinnati’s Quinton Coats launched a walk-off home run, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. This last-minute victory for the Bearcats adds to the tension as both teams prepare for tomorrow’s doubleheader.

The action unfolded quickly, with APSU initially taking the lead. In the top of the second inning, Zion Taylor kickstarted the scoring with a leadoff single. Following his lead, Derrick Mitchell—making his first start since February 17, 2025—achieved his first career hit, setting the stage for Paris Pridgen’s sacrifice fly that brought Taylor home, giving APSU an early 1-0 advantage.

Cincinnati responded in the bottom of the fourth, leveling the score when Enzo Infelise hit an RBI single after Derrick Pitts sparked the inning with a single up the middle.

The Governors surged ahead in the fifth, scoring three runs in a spectacular display of teamwork. After an error allowed Mitchell to reach base, Pridgen’s successful sacrifice and Trevor Conley’s single put APSU up 2-1. Ty Wisdom then doubled to deep right, extending the lead to 4-1 after a series of defensive mistakes from Cincinnati.

However, Cincinnati refused to back down. The Bearcats clawed back in the seventh, scoring two runs to tighten the game. An error on a pickoff attempt by Gavin Alveti allowed both runners to advance, setting the stage for Jackson Smith to bring them within one run.

With the game tied at four in the ninth, Cincinnati’s Charlie Niehaus delivered a clutch hit, driving in Daniel Conlan to send the game into extra innings. It was a tense atmosphere as both teams fought for dominance.

In the bottom of the tenth, Jett Hope took the mound for APSU, but a single pitch proved costly. Coats’ homer not only secured the win for Cincinnati but also marked a heartbreaking moment for APSU, as Hope took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season.

Cincinnati’s Carson Marsh earned the win, improving his record to 3-1 after striking out two batters in the final inning.

The stakes are high as APSU looks to rebound in the doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow, February 28, starting at 11:30 AM CT. Fans are eager to see if the Governors can regain momentum in this crucial series.
