The Detroit Lakes wrestling team showcased its talent on February 26, 2024, at the Grand Casino Arena, successfully advancing all three of its competitors to the quarterfinals of the Class AA individual competition. Each wrestler secured victories in the round of 16, marking a significant achievement for the Lakers.
Detroit Lakes head coach Taylor Nein expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “This tournament is the goal, it’s what everybody trains for, this is the vision.” He emphasized that reaching this stage is a notable accomplishment, highlighting that not all wrestlers have the opportunity to win at this level.
Anthony Chilton, competing in the 107-pound weight class, initiated the Lakers’ success by defeating Braden Bresnehan of Scott West by decision, with a score of 6-2. Chilton is set to face Trey Kraemer from Rocori in the quarterfinals. Coach Nein praised Chilton’s strategic approach, noting, “For it being his first state tournament, I thought he did a great job. He wrestled smart out there and stayed out of tough positions.”
Following Chilton, Gage Weber took to the mat at 121 pounds. His match against Braeden Geise from Albany proved to be closely contested, ending in a narrow 6-5 victory for Weber. The match highlighted Weber’s defensive skills, which were crucial in securing his win. He will now compete against Kaden Linquist from Kasson-Mantorville. Coach Nein remarked on Weber’s focus, stating, “He stayed in great position throughout the match and he went six minutes for the win.”
The final match for Detroit Lakes featured Ryan Francis, who competed in the heavyweight division at 215 pounds. Francis delivered an impressive performance, winning by fall against Michael Markgraff of Hutchinson in just 4:45. Francis’s ability to adapt during matches has been a key factor in his success. He is scheduled to face Joe Kruse from Torino-Grace in the quarterfinals. Coach Nein noted, “He keeps his composure and is able to adjust during the matches to see where his opponent is most vulnerable.”
The quarterfinals for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class AA competition will take place on February 27, 2024, at the Grand Casino Arena, starting at 10:00. With all three Detroit Lakes wrestlers advancing, the team looks to build on its momentum and achieve further success in the tournament.
