MIDDLEBURG — On February 12, 2024, Dr. Lindsay Lindsey, a general surgeon, performed a surgery at St. Vincent’s Clay County using the hospital’s newly acquired surgical technology, the Da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system. This state-of-the-art machine, the first of its kind in Clay County, promises to enhance surgical procedures and facilitate faster patient recovery through minimally invasive techniques.
The Da Vinci 5 system is designed to improve the capabilities of skilled surgeons by offering advanced technology similar to the previously used XI model. According to Bryan Walrath, president and CEO of St. Vincent’s Clay County, “The Da Vinci 5 reflects our commitment to investing in state-of-the-art technologies that enhance our patients’ quality of care and experience at our hospital.” The hospital invested approximately $2.7 million in this system, emphasizing its potential benefits for the local community.
During a procedure, Dr. Lindsey prepares by placing laparoscopic ports to dock the robotic system. After this, she operates from a console across the room, using hand controls while a first assist and scrub technician support her. The robot’s four interactive arms act as extensions of her hands, allowing for precision and control during surgery. “If I need different instruments, I ask my tech to remove the instruments and replace them with new ones,” Dr. Lindsey explained.
The advantages of the Da Vinci 5 system extend to various surgical procedures, including gall bladder and appendix removals, hernia repairs, and colectomies. With incisions measuring less than one inch, patients experience reduced pain and quicker recovery times. The system’s advanced force feedback technology helps gauge tissue tension, resulting in less strain during operations. Dr. Lindsey noted, “It’s 40% less tension on tissue, and that can only mean good things.”
The Da Vinci 5 boasts over 150 enhancements compared to its predecessor, featuring improved accuracy, precision, and tenfold increases in computing power. Surgeons can also benefit from real-time video access of their procedures, allowing for post-operation analysis. Dr. Lindsey described this feature: “The video of the surgery goes immediately to my phone. I can review it like a golfer looks at a swing.”
In addition to its technical advantages, the Da Vinci 5 allows for telepresence, facilitating collaboration with other medical professionals. This capability will enable experts from different locations to assist in procedures, particularly in complex cases. “We believe really strongly that Day 365, three years and five years, this is going to have a huge impact for patients in Clay,” Dr. Lindsey stated.
As St. Vincent’s Clay County embraces this cutting-edge technology, the hospital aims to improve surgical outcomes and enhance the overall healthcare experience for the community it serves.
