Cape Town Opera Unveils ‘Opera Blocks: Under the Sea’ for Kids

Cape Town Opera has announced an engaging new initiative titled “Opera Blocks: Under the Sea,” designed specifically for babies and toddlers aged 0–5. This immersive theatrical experience will take place at various libraries across Cape Town from March 26 to March 31, 2026.

The production is the brainchild of Elizma Badenhorst, who has taken on the roles of writer, choreographer, and director. Lasting approximately 45 minutes, “Opera Blocks: Under the Sea” features performances by members of the CTO’s Judith Neilson Young Artist Programme and Vocal Ensemble, with musical accompaniment provided by Nathan Lewis on keyboard. This innovative show combines live singing with storytelling, movement, and tactile design, creating a relaxed atmosphere that caters to young children and their caregivers.

Performances will be held at several locations throughout Cape Town, each beginning at 1:00 PM. The schedule includes the Gugulethu Library on March 26, the Bellville Library on March 27, the Retreat Library on March 28, the Milnerton Library on March 30, and concluding at the Sea Point Library on March 31.

In addition to the library performances, there will be further opportunities to experience the show at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) from April 1 to April 3, 2026. This festival, known for celebrating the arts in the Klein Karoo region, will offer an expanded platform for the production, reaching a wider audience.

“Opera Blocks: Under the Sea” aims to foster an early appreciation of the arts among young children, introducing them to the world of opera in a playful and accessible manner. With its unique combination of auditory and visual elements, the production promises to be both entertaining and educational for the little ones.

Through initiatives like this, Cape Town Opera continues to demonstrate its commitment to community engagement and the cultural enrichment of families in the region.
