In a thrilling first-round matchup of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament, the South Rowan high school girls basketball team narrowly defeated Carson with a final score of 49-46 on March 4, 2024. The game showcased intense competition, with both teams vying for a spot in the semifinals.
Christine Wilhoit played a pivotal role in South’s victory, scoring 10 points and hitting three crucial three-pointers. Head coach Alex Downs praised her performance, stating, “She made the shot that put us over the top.” Wilhoit has demonstrated her scoring ability throughout the season, including an impressive outing earlier against Robinson, where she contributed 13 points off the bench.
The fourth-seeded South Rowan team, now boasting a record of 15-9, managed to secure the win despite challenges throughout the game. The victory was solidified by Danica Krieg, who made two key free throws late in the fourth quarter. This win marks a significant achievement, as South has won two out of three matchups against the fifth-seeded Carson, which now holds a record of 10-12.
Meghan Eagle also had a standout performance for South, scoring a career-high 18 points. Coach Downs highlighted Eagle’s all-around game, noting, “She had a phenomenal game. Defense, passing and scoring.” The team relied on Eagle’s contribution, especially in the decisive third quarter, where she scored nine points.
For Carson, Julia Burleson led the scoring with 12 points, while freshmen Cambrie Perry, Audrey Faggart, and Braylee Johnson collectively added 28 points. Despite their efforts, Carson faced significant setbacks, playing without key guard Brooklyn Johnson and leading scorer Rylee Hedrick, who was recovering from an ankle injury. Coach Chloe Monroe expressed pride in her team’s effort, stating, “We fought really hard and had every opportunity to win it. We just couldn’t hit shots at the end when it mattered most.”
The game started with Carson struggling to find their rhythm, but they rallied to tie the score at 18-18 by halftime. However, South’s strong performance in the third quarter proved crucial, allowing them to pull ahead.
Carson is set to compete in the upcoming 5A playoffs, hoping for a healthier roster. Meanwhile, South Rowan will advance to the semifinals, scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 6, 2024, against the top-seeded Northwest Cabarrus team.
