O’Leary, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan University, has a long-standing professional relationship with Minter, having first met during their time at Indiana State University. The two have collaborated at various institutions, including Georgia State University and Florida Tech. O’Leary’s promotion comes just six days after Minter’s exit, highlighting the Chargers’ quick decision-making process as they seek to maintain their defensive prowess.
In his introductory remarks on February 3, O’Leary expressed enthusiasm about the prospects of enhancing the team’s defensive strategy. “Number one, we’re going to elevate what we do well,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of building on the existing foundation. He plans to adapt the defense to fit the current personnel while also striving to improve its effectiveness.
Evaluating the Chargers’ Defensive Roster
The Chargers’ defense has shown considerable strength in recent seasons, allowing an average of just 20 points per game in 2025, ranking ninth in the league. This follows an impressive performance in 2024, where they limited opponents to a league-best 17.7 points. O’Leary will have several returning starters to work with, including defensive lineman Jamaree Caldwell, linebacker Troy Dye, and safety Derwin James Jr., a five-time Pro Bowl selection.
O’Leary is particularly eager to collaborate with James, noting his competitive nature and energy. “He’s the ultimate competitor,” O’Leary remarked, highlighting James’s influence on the team.
