UPDATE: The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent plea for blood and platelet donations following severe winter storms that have canceled over 500 blood drives nationwide. Since the beginning of the year, these cancellations have resulted in more than 20,000 donations going uncollected, exacerbating an already critical national blood shortage.
Severe weather conditions, including snow, ice, and extreme cold, have not only disrupted blood drives but also complicated the transportation of essential blood products. Hospitals are now facing significant challenges in receiving timely deliveries, risking patient care. The Red Cross is calling on donors of all blood types—especially those in regions unaffected by the storms—to schedule a donation immediately.
Authorities report that some hospitals have been forced to postpone elective procedures due to the dwindling blood supply. This shortage may lead to difficult decisions for doctors and trauma surgeons about patient prioritization when inventories reach critically low levels.
Blood drives are crucial for maintaining the nation’s blood supply, with the Red Cross supplying approximately 40% of the U.S. blood supply. “We are in a dire situation,” said a Red Cross spokesperson. “The need for blood is urgent, and we need the community’s help now more than ever.”
Donors can make appointments through the Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). As an added incentive, those who donate blood or platelets from January 26 to February 28, 2026, will receive a $20 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
The Red Cross encourages individuals in areas experiencing severe winter conditions to donate when it is safe to do so. “Every donation counts and can save lives,” the spokesperson emphasized.
As the situation develops, the Red Cross will continue to provide updates on blood supply status and ongoing needs. Community support is vital in addressing this urgent health crisis.
