A popular brunch destination in Philadelphia, Sunrise Social, is taking action to support renowned chef Reuben “Big Rube” Harley, who is currently facing significant health challenges. This month, the restaurant has introduced a special menu item called the Sunrise Surf N’ Turf, with proceeds aimed at assisting Harley, who has been diagnosed with stage 4B prostate cancer and is also dealing with heart and kidney failure.
The limited-time offering is priced at $32.99 and features grilled lamb chops and butter-roasted lobster tail, served over Sunrise Social’s three-cheese grits, garnished with roasted red peppers, aji verde, and fresh herbs. This dish will be available throughout February at both Sunrise Social locations in Philadelphia and Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Community Support for Chef Harley
Chef Harley is a prominent figure in Philadelphia’s culinary and creative scenes, recognized for his diverse contributions, which include culinary projects, fashion photography, and entrepreneurship. Since news of his diagnosis broke, the community has rallied in support, contributing over $16,000 through a GoFundMe campaign launched on January 1, 2026. This financial support is aimed at helping Harley cover essential living expenses and medical costs not fully addressed by his health insurance.
The initiative has personal significance for Aaron Anderson, the founder of Sunrise Social and a long-time friend of Harley. Their professional relationship began after Anderson experienced Harley’s cooking at an event, leading to multiple collaborations during the pandemic. These included the establishment of two ghost kitchens in Philadelphia, each operating five different culinary concepts.
A Lifeline Through Brunch
Anderson and Harley also partnered to open Big Rube’s Fried Chicken at Subaru Park in Chester, the home stadium of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union. Anderson has expressed that the menu initiative aims to amplify the community’s response to Harley’s situation, emphasizing his status as one of Philadelphia’s most admired figures.
Through the Sunrise Surf N’ Turf, Sunrise Social hopes to not only attract diners but also highlight the significant role local businesses can play in supporting community members in times of crisis. This effort transforms a dish into a form of tangible support during a critical moment in Harley’s life.
With the continued backing from the community and initiatives like this, the hope is to provide Harley with the assistance he needs while reminding everyone of the power of local solidarity.
