Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu Faces 10-Week Injury Layoff

Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu is set to miss approximately 10 weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained during a recent match against Arsenal. The 21-year-old winger suffered the injury while pursuing a long ball in the second half of United’s 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, where he notably scored a stunning half-volley from just outside the box.

In a post-match press conference, United’s interim head coach Michael Carrick indicated that Dorgu “came off with, hopefully, a little bit of cramp.” However, the club is still evaluating the severity of the injury, leaving the timeline for his recovery uncertain.

Impact on Manchester United’s Season

Dorgu’s absence is a significant setback for Manchester United. Under former head coach Ruben Amorim, he primarily played as a wing-back, but Carrick has recently utilized him as a left winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Dorgu has been a key player, starting and scoring in both the Manchester derby and the Arsenal match. If he is indeed sidelined for 10 weeks, he will miss the next eight fixtures, potentially returning after the international break in March, with a scheduled match against Leeds United on April 11.

Joining Dorgu on the sidelines is centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who has missed the last eleven games due to a back injury sustained in early December. Dorgu has made 22 appearances in the Premier League this season, contributing three goals and three assists. The Denmark international transferred to Manchester United on February 2, 2023, from Serie A club Lecce for £25 million (approximately $33.7 million) and has since made a total of 44 appearances for the club.

Dorgu’s Recent Form and Future Prospects

The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for both Dorgu and Manchester United. According to Mark Critchley, a correspondent for the club, Dorgu’s recent performances represented some of his best since joining Old Trafford. His remarkable strike at Arsenal followed a goal in the Manchester derby the week prior, and he had also scored a contender for goal of the month against Newcastle United on Boxing Day. In his last five matches, Dorgu had netted three goals after being moved to a more advanced position, showcasing his potential to shine.

The new role reinvigorated Dorgu, who had previously struggled for form since his transfer. Amorim noted that he could sense Dorgu’s “anxiety” during matches, but recent performances suggested he was overcoming those challenges. With Dorgu now sidelined, Matheus Cunha is expected to be the primary replacement on the left wing. While Cunha possesses skill and experience, Dorgu’s recent form means his absence will be keenly felt by the team.

Manchester United now faces the challenge of maintaining their momentum without one of their rising stars. As they navigate the upcoming fixtures, the team will look to adapt and find alternative strategies to compensate for Dorgu’s loss.
